Rights-Intact Gun Legislation – Responsible Gun Ownership Act aka G.I. Joe Act.
Veteran and Officer in-school education program – New statewide program will bring active duty police officers and military veterans into classrooms to instill gun safety and a sense of responsibility and honor in young people. Children should first learn about guns in this context instead of first learning about them from video games, television, and movies. As a kid who grew up in the 80s, I still remember the moral values instilled into our generation by G.I. Joe. Let’s put real heroes in front of students, and help heal the rift between Officers and Civilians.
Licensing w/ written test, optional fee waiver – The state will require potential new gun owners to obtain a low-cost license to own a gun, which is then reflected on their state ID. To the indicating marker on one’s license, they must pass a written test similar to the written driver’s test, which may be done at the DMV. The purpose of the test is to ensure the owner is aware of gun safety measures, including gun storage, and that they know when it is legal to fire a gun.
Background Checks – Background checks will be required to own a gun, primarily looking for felony convictions, fugitives, and mental illnesses involving tendencies toward violence. Will not target people with mental illnesses who are not prone to violence.
