I’m 43 years old, was raised in Nevada, Iowa and graduated high school in 2000. From August 7, 2002—2018, except for a brief stint where I attended DMACC in 2003, I hitchhiked the country with my guitar, writing songs, compiling the “hidden” history of our justice system we didn’t learn in school, and ardently studying law and ethnobiology. Since returning to Iowa in 2019, I graduated with Honors from Boone DMACC in spring 2024, and am currently attending ISU thanks to a FAFSA grand and the Coca-Cola Scholarship I earned in 2023.
One thing has remained certain in this lifetime: I’ve never stayed on the beaten path. Although I love spending time outdoors, performing avant garde songs on my guitar, and gardening, due to the current constitutional crises we are experiencing in our state and nation, and the deep concern I have for myself, fellow Iowans, and future generations, I am now bringing together the knowledge I have gathered through the years onto this website in order to answer my calling in life: doing what I need to do instead of what I want to do.
At this time my life consists on building this website, fleshing out the platform and related organizations (e.g. AAR, PIA, CRC), and moving forward with the casework for some necessary lawsuits I filed. Due to the fact that obscene injustice and a media blackout * occurred during the suit I filed last year, Wilson v. the State of Iowa and Kim Reynolds for Iowa, this time I am getting everything onto this website so people can follow the federal case, Wilson et al v. Trump et al., in hopes that Iowans will flood the courthouse when I finally get my day in court. Due to the fact that many people may be concerned about the implications of my lawsuits, at this time I am prioritizing getting my plans for Governor conveyed via the website, to show that I am not a threat, but rather what I have been working diligently toward this lifetime will help Iowans immensely.
* Although We Are Iowa did write an article, it was not accurate, nor did it cover most of what the case was about. Therefore I am counting it as part of the blackout.
The September 11 attacks in 2001 came as a major turning point for me. Many traumatic events happened in my life right around that time: my dad had a heart attack, I was in a car wreck, about 20 or so guys in Gilbert beat me nearly to death out in a cornfield and tried to murder me before I escaped, and of course the country was trying to make sense of the attacks. When the country set out for revenge, instead I ordered a guitar off e-bay and began hitchhiking the country to write songs to protest the war and the wanton destruction of nature so prevalent and unnecessary throughout society today.
The skills and knowledge I learned throughout my travels couldn’t be more relevant to Iowans today.
During this same time, a series of serendipitous events transpired which felt like “signs”. For example, after I was severely beaten, the nurse in Nevada told me she was related to the people who attacked me, and gave me their names. After putting a splint on my finger, I returned home, and my 200 disc CD player — which was present to randomize songs — began playing Perfect Sense pt. I and II by Roger Waters,
As a Christian raised in the Methodist Church, I always liked the rebellious side of Jesus — the one that flipped over the money tables, or called out the Scribes and Pharisees as “hypocrites” and a “brood of vipers”. That’s part of why I’m running for Governor: I’m tired of Republicans hurting instead of helping people, and of Democrats “bunting for justice” when we need a homerun. I’m tired of everyday Americans not being represented, unable to fund justice through our overly-complex court system, and nature getting endlessly bowled over for real estate development while Iowans get buried deeper and deeper into the concrete jungle.
I’m sick of hearing fellow Iowans feeling hopeless and tired, saying things like “Things will never change,” or “That’s a nice idea, but it will never happen.” If we’re not getting paid to say those things, we shouldn’t be campaigning for free for people who are taking advantage of us.
Even though I’m unconventional, I think that’s exactly what we need in politics right now. I think we’ve got too many career politicians who will never truly speak up for the people because there are too many conflicts of interest, obligations to their donors, and hidden contracts we don’t know about. My campaign
After announcing my candidacy on March 31, 2023, my candidate committee, “Sondra Wilson for Iowa Governor”, was registered with the Iowa Ethics & Campaign Disclosure Board on Sept. 9 2024. Although I was previously registered as a Democrat, I am now running nonpartisan. Feel free to view my Statement of Organization.
