Teach Jurisprudence in High Schools

Teach jurisprudence (the science of the application of law aka “the basics of law”) in high school

The Act also will create a class in all Iowa high schools to teach the basics of criminal and civil law to students, including, for example, white collar crimes and color of law crimes.

Students should graduate high school knowing the difference between criminal and civil law. and basic step-by-step what to do if your rights are violated – including by an officer or government official (e.g. color of law crimes). Students should know how to create an effective contract, and the importance of creating contracts even for the purpose of engaging in simple agreements. They should be taught what to do if a judge or administrator makes an unjust determination – not just “how to appeal the decision”, but also how to file a complaint against them with the Iowa Judicial Qualifications Commission. Students should learn how to file a complaint with the Attorney Disciplinary Board, if needed, or, the Office of the Ombudsman. Iowans need to know how to interact with our court system, and how to hold government officials accountable.
